This amazing artistic work along with the portrait of Eisenhower in the background dating it, brings back vivid memories of my best childhood friend Frank. Frank’s father was a corporate executive who believed in tough love and strict discipline for his son. Whenever he “misbehaved”, Frank was forced to go to the back yard and cut a birch switch. He was stripped naked in a similar manner and made to endure a very painful chastisement. I recall seeing Frank’s naked bottom in the shower after gym class decorated with welts from his dad’s punishments. I also recall Mr. Jones our gym teacher, nodding his head in approval after studying Frank’s chewed out behind . Child Protective Services ready to intervene on behalf of Frank’s bottom was inconceivable in those days.
Thanks for the comment Doctor Garrett, and for your narrative regarding your friend, I am sure that Frank was a better and more disciplined person, having been set on the right track in his youth. The difference, of course, with this picture is that the son, is a young army officer, and as such, child protective services would never have got involved.
Such a coincidence Bruce. That’s exactly what my dear friend Frank became!
And there we see the benefits of wisely applied domestic discipline.
Sadly, Frank was killed in action.
